4 out of 5 stars Too involved to be objective?   July 30, 2008

I have kept up with these characters, Bella, Edward & Jacob, for three books now and I am finding it hard to find my objectivity these days. Was this book good? Yes, they all are. Could I put `ECLIPSE' down once I picked it up? Absolutely not! But this was not my favorite book in the series.

Now before you all start throwing tomatoes (because I know many people think it is the best thus far), this goes back to my objectivity being compromised. There were so many great aspects of this book, for example, the flash backs as to how the rest of the Cullen's became vampires (loved that!), the history of the Quileute tribe and the story line about the newborns (which, in truth, I had higher hopes for but I liked it overall). But in my head there is a certain outcome that I would prefer for Bella, but by the end of `ECLIPSE' it became pretty clear that what I want and what is actually going to happen are two very different things. It is like watching a good friend make a lot of decisions that you know are really bad. It is frustrating.

Also, Bella was a little hard to deal with in this third book. She was whiney and selfish , in my opinion, quite often I wanted to slap her (smile)! I found her treatment of everyone from Edward to Jacob to Charlie off-putting and I often found myself screaming at the book for Bella to "stop being so selfish!!" Nonetheless, this book is just as engrossing as the rest, that point I cannot deny. I found myself reading 'ECLIPSE' faster than I have ever ready any other 600+ page book before. And I am waiting not-so-patiently on the edge of my seat for the fourth and final book in the Twilight saga `BREAKING DAWN'!

Don't get me wrong, i love the Twilight saga, even if they aren't the best written books they really draw you in! Or they did anyway! Whilst Eclipse is a great book, Bella really began to grate on me! Her indecisiveness and selfishness drove me mad! I found myself really disliking her and by the end of the book i just wanted to finish it so i could start reading something else! I'll still be buying Breaking Dawn though as i still want to know how it all ends!

2 out of 5 stars A struggle to find anything to enjoy   June 16, 2010

This is the third in Stephenie Meyer's now extremely famous series about Bella and Edward. In this book the Cullens realise that Bella is threatened by Victoria; Bella struggles between Edward and Jacob; and Edward issues his terms for Bella to be turned into a vampire.

This is the worst of the three. I struggled to reach the end, and found no tension at all in the last one hundred pages or so. I really disliked the story Jasper tells about the wars in the South and the newborn armies that are created - can anyone say 'info-dump'? Once again, Meyer needs something to create tension and so shoves it into the story with no sensitivity or appreciation for what has gone before.

I was very disappointed with the men in this book. Edward becomes even more controlling - literally, kidnapping his girlfriend to ensure she does what he wants. Issuing ultimatums. Just the kind of guy you would advise your girlfriend to get away from.

Jacob is just as bad. For someone who was so delightful to read about in parts of the second book, in this book his delusion about Bella's feelings and his refusal to accept what she is telling him leads him to sexually assault her.

Count me a person who is neither Team Jacob or Team Edward!

And then we come to Bella - a girl who is determined to create the most melodramatic life. Someone never satisfied with her current lot. After all, she describes Edward as the most perfect man and is convinced she wants to be with him forever, so much so she is willing to become a vampire (strange girl). However, she also yearns after Jacob - why? If Edward is so perfect what can Jacob possibly offer? She strings the two guys along and causes them both hurt unnecessarily. She has gone beyond annoying and whiny (as she was in books one and two) and is now dislikable.

Finally, I have a gripe that was present before but came to the fore in this book because there was so much more romantic action between Edward and Bella. I actually get turned off by the idea of a guy who is essentially a freezing rock. Those unyielding cold lips are about as unappealing as anything I can think of. When you struggle to realise where Bella's attraction for Edward stems from, there is little left in the books to enjoy.

I shall most certainly not be picking up the fourth and I am now only keeping the third book so that I can compare book to film when it comes out. After that the whole series will be going to the secondhand book store for someone else to endure!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the saga ...   June 8, 2009

In my opinion as a true Twilight Mum (have to be over 25 & have kids to qualify) this is the best book of the saga. Having Edward and Bella back together in all their intensity and complexity after the break in New Moon is much more satisfying and the relationships between Jacob, Edward & Bella are explored fully with some really insightful dialogue - it was painful to read, as anything well written should be when it discusses thorny issues. The back stories are excellent, it's a more rounded book than the previous 2, and leaves the story open for loose-end tying in the last installment. It had everything I want from a novel, romance, action, unrequited love, family, friendship - it's the whole package!

3 out of 5 stars Controlling boyfriend   June 7, 2009

I've now finished all the Twilight series and this book annoyed me the most. I DO love Edward really but if he was this controlling with me I would tell him to **** off. Sometimes in the series I got the feeling it was a vampire soap opera, somewhere between Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series and The Waltons! Like Hamiliton, Meyer clearly identifies herself with the main female character ( to put it mildly) and I got the feeling sometimes I was trespassing on someone's personal fantasy and all that goes with that, their morals and view of life. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the book but I'm not sure they're anything but plot driven. Characters are broadly sketched, Rosalie is beautiful and rude, Carlisle is beautiful and compassionate etc. Nothing went deep enough. And the inability of the characters to just tell the truth to each other was unrealistic. As a flight of fantasy, it's great. As soul searching fiction, I found it a bit two dimensional. Still love Edward secretly though:) I'd probably handle him differently ! Grin
